Christmas in Savannah

Christmas in Savannah is a special time. The historic downtown area is decorated in red bows, wreaths, and white lights, creating a sense of nostalgia and excitement for the holiday season. Food can also create a sense of nostalgia during the holidays, whether it’s your mother’s famous Christmas Day roast, the chocolate cake your grandmother always made, or the cookies you would make every year for Santa Claus and his reindeer. This season, at Azalea Inn, we pulled out a few of our favorite holiday recipes, perfect for Christmas day! Today, we will share with you our favorite Christmas breakfast and our favorite Santa Claus cookies!

Caramelized French Toast

Our Caramelized French Toast is one of our favorite breakfast recipes here at Azalea Inn. It is also the perfect decadent treat for Christmas morning! Don’t want to make it yourself? Then let us do the hard work! We’ll be serving this scrumptious dish on Christmas morning!

½ Cup Corn Syrup

2 Cups Brown Sugar

2 Sticks Butter

1 Loaf French Bread, cubed

12 Eggs

2 Cups Half & Half

2 Tsp Vanilla

½ Cup Sour Cream

1 Pint Strawberries, sliced

8 greased Ramekins

Combine Corn Syrup, Brown Sugar and Butter in a heavy sauce pan and heat, stirring until bubbly. Pour mixture into greased ramekins. Fill ramekins with bread cubes. Mix Eggs, Half & Half and vanilla and pour over bread, making sure all cubes are soaked. Cover ramekins and refrigerate over-night.

Pre-heat oven to 350. Bake for 45 minutes. To serve, loosen edges of bread from ramekin with a knife and invert onto plate so that caramelized part is on top. Spoon TBSP of Sour Cream on top and top with Sliced Strawberries.

How about some oh-so-gooey Giant Chocolate Toffee Cookies for Santa?

Giant Chocolate Toffee Cookies

Another one of our favorite holiday treats at Azalea Inn is our Giant Chocolate Toffee Cookies. Rich, sweet, and oh-so-gooey, these are the best cookies to leave for Santa Claus (or to have a few for yourself!).

1/2 cup all purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

12 ounces bittersweet (not unsweetened) chocolate, chopped

4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter

1-3/4 cups (packed) brown sugar

4 large eggs

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

5 1.4-ounce chocolate-covered English toffee bars (such as Heath), coarsely chopped

1 cup walnuts, toasted, chopped

Combine flour, baking powder and salt in small bowl; whisk to blend. Stir chocolate and butter in top of double boiler set over simmering water until melted and smooth. Remove from over water. Cool mixture to lukewarm.

Using electric mixer, beat sugar and eggs in bowl until thick, about 5 minutes.

Beat in chocolate mixture and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture, then toffee and nuts. Chill batter overnight.

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment or waxed paper. Drop batter by 1/4 cupfuls onto sheets, spacing 2 1/2 inches apart. Bake just until tops are dry and cracked but cookies are still soft to touch, about 15 minutes. Cool on sheets. (Can be made 2 days ahead. Store airtight at room temperature.)
