The story of the Azalea begins with its construction as a personal residence in 1889. Walter Coney was a business mogul in the Savannah area during his life and ensured that his house was a premier property in the city that he had worked so hard to build. Mr. Coney helped found the Savanah Board of Trade and held the position of Director for the Savannah Bank and Trust. He also played a leadership role for Bonaventure Cemetery (then the Evergreen Cemetery Company), and the GA Ports of Authority (Then the Savannah Port Society).
Mr. Coney’s family had a rich legacy. His Son, Colonel Walter E. Coney founded “Walter E. Coney Naval Stores” after his WWI tour with the American Army. His nephew set a record for fastest transcontinental flight in 1921. His grandson was the youngest Lt. Commander in the history of the Navy before WW2 and his other grandson acted as diplomat with the US State Department.
After his death in 1905, his daughters continued to live and maintain the household well into the 1940s. After that the building was used for a variety of business including a survey office, advertising agency, and an architectural firm. In 1995 it was converted into a bed breakfast by Tom and Maria Burns who commissioned the wonderful mural in our dining room. We purchase the Azalea in 2022 and hope to continue the Coney’s legacy for distinguished service so you can enjoy the best that Savannah has to offer.
