The history of Savannah Georgia is entwined with its gardening. In the fall of 2005, Micheal and Teresa Jacobson, new innkeepers of Azalea Inn, a Savannah inn and garden hotel mansion, planted a Georgia heritage garden. [ more ] With a tip from marketing consultant Sandy Traub that the Azalea Inn garden hotel mansion property may be built in the colonial garden district of Savannah Georgia, historian Joy Beall validated that the colonial gardens of Savannah, utilized by Savannah's first colonists, were indeed the lands on which Azalea Inn garden inn mansion was built. When Clint Eastwood was in town, historic Huntingdon Street was the site of his Hollywood movie trailer. The legendary movie maker was enticed to the Savannah Georgia colonial garden district for the filming of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, John Berendt's novel, which enjoyed years on the New York Best Seller list. On the vacant lot across Huntingdon Street from Azalea Inn's 217 Huntingdon Street mansion is a vacant lot where Clint Eastwood's movie trailer was parked during filming.

During Savannah's early years philanthropic support from England include the charitable contributions to house boy orphans. Selina Countess of Huntingdon -- the namesake of Azalea Inn's Huntingdon Street -- was a prominent benefactor of Bethesda, colonial America's first orphanage, originally intended also to be college for boys as well.

From the March 2005 Savannah City Hall, minutes of the final plat for Huntingdon Subdivision, an unnumbered lot on the north side of Huntingdon Street between Price and East Broad Streets was approved. Thus, Huntingdon Street beautification continues.

Tidbit: The azalea is the state of Georgia's official wildflower.
