Savannah has a grand history as The Forest City. In 1896, the Park & Tree Commission was established to assure the orderly forestation and beautification of the entire City. Also called Umbrella Tree, Chinaberry honors the historic Savannah Georgia tree canopy of the Chinaberry found along Savannah Georgia streets, in nature photography of Greenwich Cemetery, a location which Azalea Inn, a Savannah Georgia garden hotel and one of Savannah GA hotels in the historic district, can assist you to locate.
Naming the Chinaberry, one 1833 account reports, “ What constitutes its beauty is the manner in which the city is laid out. There is one immensely broad avenue, about half way across the city, called South Broad Street [now Oglethorpe Avenue], and extending the full length of it from east to west. This is magnificently shaded by rows of China trees...full of small odorous blossoms in the spring of the year. Then in laying out the city every other square has been left as an open one, enclosed with a railing, laid out with walks and planted with shade trees and rustic seats arranged in them all about. These manifold grassy parks, or lungs of the city as I heard them called, are very picturesque and inviting, and highly suggestive of health and comfort.”
In Savannah, the Chinaberry, also called Pride of India, formerly lined South Broad Street (now Oglethorpe Avenue). Today the Chinaberry tree is prominent on Drayton Street at Oglethorpe Avenue on the street side of the Savannah-Chatham Board of Education administration building. Chinaberry trees are also found in Greenwich Cemetery, a colonial Georgia plantation which played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War in Savannah Georgia.
Belonging to the mahogany family of plants, Chinaberry is native to Asia. Striking and colorful, Chinaberry was widely introduced as an ornamental shade tree because of its large compound leaves, its distinctive clusters of lilac-colored flowers and its round yellow fruits. Its seeds are spread by fruit-eating birds. At least one European company makes flooring from chinaberry wood.
