Savannah Events

May 13, 2015 by Teresa Jacobson

Summer kicks off with fun Savannah events.

We’ve had a gorgeous extended spring here in Savannah.  There has been just enough rain to fill the city with flowers, bright blue skies with highs in the mid 70’s, and cool evenings on the porch.  It’s a beautiful time in Savannah.

Tybee Island Beach Bum Parade

Tybee Island Beach Bum Parade

Savannah events continue to be fun and fascinating as we approach the summer season.  The rest of May will take you to the beach, showcase Paris worthy high fashion, bring runners back to Savannah in a burst of color, and Savannah is going to try to break the world record for the largest bar crawl.  On May 15th, the Tybee Island Beach Bum Parade will make its way across the island.  A local spectacle that showcases all that is unique, fun, and funky about Tybee Island.  If you don’t make it to Tybee Beach on the 15th, you can drop by Telfair Museum’s Jepson Center where Life’s a Beach photography exhibit will be opening.  One of Britain’s most beloved photographers, Martin Parr, takes you on a journey to beaches around the world highlighting the people who enjoy them.  Telfair Museums is celebrating the opening by partnering with nationally recognized local designer Zia Sachedina with an exhibit of his exotic collection of jewelry and accessories in, Art on Tap: Zia at the Beach.

Billed as the top student fashion show in the country, May 16th,  SCAD School of Fashion students showcase their talent at the annual SCAD Fashion Show at the SCAD Museum.  If you want a glimpse into the future of fashion, you can watch the show online LIVE here.

May 16th, The Color Run returns to Savannah.  The original paint race and “Happiest 5K on the Planet”, The Color Run turns Savannah’s Historic District into a burst of color and fitness.  And on the other side of the event spectrum, on May 30th, Savannah is once again going to try to break the Guinness World Record for Largest Pub Crawl with The Crawl of the South.

As summer begins to simmer in June, Savannah events focus on music and art.  River Street’s annual Blues Jazz & BBQ Festival is June 6th and 7th.  Deep southern blues, smooth jazz and smokey BBQ will be served up all weekend long on River Street.  The Savannah Civic Center has a fantastic line-up of shows in June.  Classic artists for all music tastes with Earth, Wind, & Fire, Casting Crowns, MAZE featuring Frankie Beverly, and John MelencampThe Lucas Theater calendar in June is full of tributes to great artists.  See 1964 The Tribute (a tribute to the Beatles), Walking After Midnight w/ JJ Hobbs (a tribute to Patsy Cline), and Travelin’ Light with acclaimed New York Cabaret artist Minda Larsen (a tribute to Savannah’s own Johnny Mercer).

On June 7th, take the opportunity to join one of two art events showcasing galleries in two different areas of town.  The Savannah Art Walk begins at Rocks on the Roof with a glass of wine and guides you through 4 galleries or exhibitions in the Historic District.  Or head to the south end of Forsyth Park and take the Starland District First Friday Art March through local galleries and their Indy Art Market.  Local art always makes a great Savannah event!

Come As You Are: Art of the 90’s Exhibit is opening at The Jepson Center on June 12th and the Downtown Neighborhood Association hosts its 2nd Annual Artists and Artisans Tour on June 25th.  Enjoy sipping wine in private downtown homes while meeting local artists showcasing their latest work.

So much to do in a Savannah summer!  Read our recent blog on the best ways to tour Savannah while you’re here.  Azalea Inn and Gardens wants to be your host in the Hostess City of the South.  One visit and you’ll consider Savannah and Azalea Inn & Gardens your second home.

A Moveable Feast: The Savannah Food & Wine Festival

September 21, 2014 by Teresa Jacobson

The Savannah Food & Wine Festival

A Savannah Moveable Feast!

A Moveable Feast, Savannah Style
While reflecting on his time in Paris, Ernest Hemingway called the city of love “a moveable feast,” or a series of memories that will always remain with him. In his memoir, titled “A Moveable Feast,” Hemingway discusses his time abroad, including many descriptions of cafés, bars, and dining experiences that he fondly remembers.

Hemingway understood that food and drink are more than simply sustenance…They are combined to yield a masterful creation to enjoy, and that is exactly what the Savannah Food & Wine Festival seeks to achieve through a week long “moveable feast” in the Hostess City.

Wine & Dine Your Way Through The Savannah Food & Wine Festival
Who doesn’t enjoy an amazing meal accompanied by a delectable glass of wine? Well, Savannah certainly knows a thing or two about pairing great wine and delicious food… that’s why we have a week dedicated to the duo!
