Savannah Street Food

Love Savannah Street Food at Fire!

What exactly is street food? And where do you find it in Savannah? Street food is a concept familiar to world travelers who seek a local flavor during their travels to regions such as Africa, Asia and Latin America. It is similar to our fast food joints with the exception that these are mobile restaurants, not fixed buildings and the food is local, seasonal and generally very fresh (though you may feel some concern regarding the safety of said food in foreign countries). In Savannah there are exceedingly few food street vendors to be found except during festivals, but there is a grass-roots campaign that hopes to change that.  In the meantime, there are a few restaurants with “street food” flair! My three favorite “Street Food” restaurants are Fire, Taco Abajo and the Subdogs Hot Doggery. Today let’s talk about Fire.  Located at 13 E. Perry Lane with weekend hours from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., it is perfectly situated for Theatre goers as well as late night revelers but caters to the downtown weekday lunch crowd with ease. Order from the counter, grab a seat in the trendy tangerine and aqua space and though certainly not fast, the food arrives within a very reasonable “got to get back to work” time.

Jake and I stopped in on one of those rare Friday’s when he returns from a week on the road at a decent time. I had a bowl of Gang Dang Gai, a curry based of chicken, rice and vegetables that was so deliciously comforting that I allowed Jake but a single bite. He ordered the fried fish sandwich which he declined to share, but that’s okay, I was comfortably full with my Gang. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and would definitely return.

Saturday stroll downtown with lunch at Soho South Cafe

Soho South Cafe

Just another sunny Saturday in beautiful Savannah! Walking around in the historic district, we (Kolin, chef at Azalea Inn and Gardens and my wife, Cami) visited some of our favorite places. Strolling down Jones Street admiring the ornate ironwork and lush gardens we worked up an appetite.  Then out of the blue, a small raincloud gathered overhead and started to empty on us. What a perfect time to duck into Low Country Gourmet Foods on Liberty Street. This place has the most excellent tasting room; we took in the aromas and sipped some fine, fruit infused Balsamic vinegars… this also helped peak our cravings for some good eats. Therefore, we continued our journey (when the sun burst through that little rain pocket again)  just a bit further down the street to 12 West Liberty Street, the home of Soho South Cafe.
