January 18th, 2011 by Teresa Jacobson

President’s Day weekend is just around the corner and our Savannah B&B is so excited to be hosting a critically acclaimed writer in town for the Fourth Annual Savannah Book Festival. With over three dozen writers, who will it be?  Award-winning memoirist Tobias Wolff; famed southern novelist Lee Smith; bestselling author Sandra Brown; Karl Marlantes, Vietnam veteran and author of the stunning new novel Matterhorn; musician and environmentalist Chuck Leavell; master gardener Vince Dooley; or Egyptian-born poet Greg Djanikian?  Author, conservationist and Georgia Music Hall of Fame member Chuck Leavelland his wife, master gardener Rose Lane Leavell, will  present their rock autobiography, Between Rock and a Home Place, which explores Chuck’s life on the road with the Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones and many others, as well as reflections on their Georgia tree farm and sustainable forestry practices.

Renowned authors will present their work and their lives in letters at the FREE Savannah Book Festival, Saturday, February 19, 2011 starting at 10:00 a.m. and continuing till 5:30 p.m.  Presentations will take place in and around Telfair Square, as well as in the Telfair Museum, Jepson Art Center and Trinity Church in the heart of the historic district. We can’t decide whether to hear and speak with author Karl Marlantes, author of The Matterhorn, at Trinity United Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. or the memoirs of Lauretta Hannon, author of  The Cracker Queen. Noon might find you enjoying Randi Davenport, author of The Boy Who Loved Tornadoes, in the Telfair Sculpture Gallery. Wrap up Saturday with an evening with mother and son writers,  Sandra Brown and Ryan Brown, at the SCAD River Club at 7 p.m. followed on Sunday by Brunch with Vince Dooley at the Chatham Club.

Exciting news:  a new ice cream flavor from Leopold’s Ice Cream in honor of the Savannah Book Festival will soon be unveiled! A percentage of the proceeds from each scoop of this mystery flavor will benefit the SBF.
