Celebrate Labor Day in Savannah

August 10th, 2014 by Teresa Jacobson

300px-US-DeptOfLabor-Seal-AltColors.svg_311We all look forward to Labor Day Weekend. It’s a nice little break at the end of Summer and beginning of Fall to get away from all of the hustle and bustle of life. This year marks 120 years of Labor Day. But what is the origin of Labor Day? It isn’t just for the blow out sales and three day weekend, so what is it for?

How It All Began: The Origin of Labor Day

Who came up with Labor Day? Those details are a bit unclear. Some historical records state that it was Peter J. McGuire, Co-Founder of the American Federation of Labor that suggested the holiday. Other records credit Matthew Maguire, a machinist, for proposing the holiday in 1882 while serving as the secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.

Though the origins are muddy, each year, on the first Monday of September, we celebrate Labor day and all of the achievements made by American workers.

This 10-day festivity pays homage to the culinary gems of Savannah and offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to anyone looking for a more intimate look what these restaurants have to offer.

With over thirty spectacular restaurants participating this is a MUST for anyone!

Each restaurant participating in Savannah Restaurant Week is offering three decadent courses and for only $30 a person (not including tax and gratuity) you can be apart of this delicious escapade!

Whose Participating in Savannah Restaurant Week?

Participating restaurants for The Savannah Restaurant Week are scattered all throughout the Historic District and each has their own unique charm but let’s get you better acquainted with two of our favorites:

45 Bistro is a must for those of you looking for the terrific atmosphere of fine dining and cuisine with all the comforts of family. Located inside the Marshall House Hotel, 45 Bistro has made a significant impression on the people of Savannah and all of her travelers for being an excellent model for hospitality. And of course, one of our favorite places to have some fabulous meals!

Chef Brian, Sous Chef Alfredo, and the staff of 45 will do more satisfy your appetite; they’ll win your heart as well.

A.lure is a restaurant that might make you do a double take at the menu. Originally a divorce lawyer, Chef Charles found his true calling in low country cuisine and we are more than impressed! You’ll experience an almost overwhelming array decadent dishes that will satisfy your taste buds and send you back for more! His innovative approach to contemporary low country cuisine is truly masterful and not to be missed.

Savannah, GA Rocks at The Jinx

August 4th, 2012 by kolinpodell

Whats on at the Jinx Bar, Savannah GAThe Jinx club and bar, a.k.a. “the CBGB of the South”, is Savannah’s premier spot for crowd’s of all ages to rock to local and traveling bands. If you’re looking for awesome drinks from local long time bartenders that make you feel like you’re just enjoying a fun time in their basement, we at Azalea Inn and Gardens head to The Jinx. There is something going on every night of the week in the funky skulls and darkness atmosphere. Karaoke, Rock and Roll Bingo nights, live concerts, and Hip Hop Hop night are just a few of the weekly events that draw in the wide array of clientele.

The recent filming of the 2013 movie, “CBGB”, happened mostly at The Jinx and surrounding buildings. Top actors such as Rupert Grint and Justin Bartha had a great time there calling out bingo numbers or simply enjoying the relaxed atmosphere after a day of filming. The location manager for “CBGB”, Charley Baxter, even planned on having the wrap party for the movie at The Jinx.

The owner, Susanne Guest Warnekros, got her inspiration for The Jinx directly from CBGB. She is proud to host traveling bands in the area. Her staff goes a long way to welcome weary bandmates, housing them on couches and providing home cooked meals. The Jinx was also home to many bands during the latest Savannah Stopover Festival. The whole feeling of The Jinx is a real down home place to rock, drink, meet locals, and have an all-out great time.
