We all look forward to Labor Day Weekend. It’s a nice little break at the end of Summer and beginning of Fall to get away from all of the hustle and bustle of life. This year marks 120 years of Labor Day. But what is the origin of Labor Day? It isn’t just for the blow out sales and three day weekend, so what is it for?
How It All Began: The Origin of Labor Day
Who came up with Labor Day? Those details are a bit unclear. Some historical records state that it was Peter J. McGuire, Co-Founder of the American Federation of Labor that suggested the holiday. Other records credit Matthew Maguire, a machinist, for proposing the holiday in 1882 while serving as the secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.
Though the origins are muddy, each year, on the first Monday of September, we celebrate Labor day and all of the achievements made by American workers.
