Pimento Cheese is definitely a Southern staple – it is, after all, the Caviar of the South. But would you eat it in your breakfast sandwich? With your eggs? Between two slices of Sourdough bread? Loaded with Bacon? We would!!! Seriously, until I moved to the South (Mississippi to be exact) many (many) years ago, I don’t recall ever having pimento cheese anywhere near my taste buds. I was introduced to it while attending college and though I found it interesting, my 17-year-old Yankee palate didn’t take a serious liking to it.
Eat Pimento Locally:
Enter Savannah, a city teaming with exceptional restaurants, and in particular my favorite casual beer and burger place, Green Truck Pub where I learned to get my Pimento on. Green Truck Pub makes their own pimento cheese and offer it three ways: as an appetizer with house-made pickles and crostini, in a sandwich with mustard, lettuce and tomato, and my favorite way, on a burger. Order the Trailer Park, a tasty grass-fed all natural, hormone free, beef burger from Hunter Cattle Company, topped with said pimento cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato – and get ready to fall in love with pimento. Oh, before I forget, they have a phenomenal beer selection. They pride themselves on serving beer made in the USA in small American-owned craft breweries. I usually task my husband with our choice of beer as his palate is much broader than mine, and he has never failed me. Iron Lion Pale Ale is an easy to drink every day beer brewed right here in Savannah at the Southbound Brewing Company (ask us about tours), but my palate runs to darker more robust beers. I usually choose the Duck Rabbit Milk Stout of Farmville, NC or Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro out of Longmont, CO which are delicious enough to be dessert. Here’s a neat little factoid about Green Truck Pub that will make you smile: “We do simple food the hard way – by handmaking everything from ketchup and pimento cheese to salad dressing and veggie patties.”
Pimento Cheese Inspired Us:
But let’s get to the real reason for this post: Last week I stopped into Back in the Day Bakery (while CNN was filming) and ordered the Pig and Pimento sandwich and therein the inspiration for a pimento cheese breakfast sandwich was born. I devoured their grilled pimento and bacon sandwich, totally oblivious to the crew who filmed my obvious enjoyment for posterity and an upcoming story on eclectic Southern coastal towns covering where you should eat and what you should see. As I licked my fingers I thought “So Southern, so delicious, and so comforting. I should be sharing this with my Northern friends.” But we do breakfast at the inn, not lunch, my other self said. Ah yes, so we do. Now what? I appeased her “Proper” side by adding soft scrambled eggs and calling it a breakfast sandwich. We dressed up the plate with some roasted potatoes, a bit of kiwi, a sunny slice of orange and a burst of red with juicy just-in-season strawberries and moaned “Yes, yes, yes!”
