If you’re looking to impress, saunter over to Gryphon for a true Savannah, GA luncheon. Nestled in moss-draped Madison Square in the center of historic Savannah, Gryphon (once known as the Grypnon Tea Room) is a true southern treat. This beautifully renovated former apothocary run by SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) has a dark comfortable old library feel as you enter and though the white tableclothes might have you thinking high tea, the friendly staff immediately puts you at ease.
The menu evokes that old southern charm with new ideas and fresh and impeccable ingredients. The concise menu includes inventive salads such as the Fresh crab , avocado mousse, and tomato salad… or the Poached Salmon topped with avocado cream, mango, strawberries, candied walnuts, and goat cheese on Bibb lettuce with citrus vinaigrette. Sandwiches include a Croque-monsieur with warm applewood smoked ham and swiss on challah bread, or the southern classic Pimento Cheese grilled with onion confit and smoked bacon on cornbread. My personal favorite is the Wild Georgia Shrimp Orzo with feta and fresh tomatoes.
The Gryphon is a tea room as well, and the book-lined walls almost demand you try an exotic blend from their extensive tea wall. The service is exquisite and completely furnished by highly trained SCAD students. They are very knowledgeable about the menu and all of the teas. They are also eager to tell you about thier individual majors and where they are in their college careers!
Sophistication, class, gourmet lunch, and excellent tea are all perfect reasons to visit the Gryphon in Savannah, GA. and the Azalea Inn and Gardens is THE place to enjoy more of that same high-class style and service expected in the South’s premiere historic destination.
