Seven years in the making the12-ton centerpiece of Savannah’s new World War II memorial is settling into place. The divided spheres represent the two theatres of the war (fought in the Pacific and in Europe) has been erected to honor the more than 500 people who enlisted from Chatham County and later did in the war. Engraved bricks, honorary benches and three flagpoles will be added in the days to come.
Still somewhat shy of the $1,000,000 goal set by the Veterans Council of Chatham County, a phone-a-thon is scheduled on October 28 on WTOC from 4-6:30 pm, and engraved brick can be purchased for $100 from the council at veteranscouncilofchathamcounty.com/donate.
